American Mahjong Guide
Get your table ready, choose equipment that fits, and find the right rules reference for your group.
Getting started with American Mahjong
Start by asking your group which rules and card they use. In National Mah Jongg League play, the winning hand must match a complete line on the current year's card. A set of tiles and a printed instruction sheet are not substitutes for that card.
Before your first game, lay out your equipment, learn the tile markings and arrange a practice session with someone familiar with your group's rules. Keep the card and rules reference within reach.
A complete set or separate pieces?
If you are building a table from scratch, begin with American Mahjong sets. Read the included-items list: a product called a tile set may not include racks, a mat or every accessory you need.
If you already own part of your setup, compare Mahjong tiles and racks and pushers separately. Check the exact product rather than assuming that two pieces fit because their colors match.
- Tiles: compare the full dimensions, material, markings and included tile list.
- Racks: check usable tile space, overall length and included pushers.
- Storage: confirm whether a carrying bag or case is included.
- Your table: allow room for each player's equipment and a shared playing area.
Comparing tile sizes and rack lengths
Majlux tile options include 30 mm and 42 mm sizes; rack options include 17.3-inch and 21-inch lengths. These labels describe different measurements and do not establish compatibility on their own.
Compare tile width and thickness with the rack's usable space. Consider how the tiles feel in your hand, how clearly you can read their markings and how much space your table provides. If a product page does not answer a fit question, contact us with the two product names before ordering.
Use your group's current rules card
The NMJL card describes hands through tile groupings, suit requirements and other conditions. Read the entire line and its notes rather than combining parts of different hands. Use the current card and official rules for questions about calling tiles, jokers and scoring.
Find the card and rulebook through the National Mah Jongg League. The American Mah Jongg Association's card-reading guide offers an introduction to the card's structure. This equipment guide does not reproduce the card or replace the rules.
Common questions
Do tile sets always include racks?
No. Check the included-items list on the specific product. Complete sets and separate tile sets serve different needs.
Does a larger tile automatically fit a longer rack?
Not necessarily. Check all tile dimensions and the rack's usable space. Overall rack length alone is not enough to confirm a fit.
Can I use my regular accessories in the pool?
Do not assume that tiles or wooden accessories are suitable for water. Check each product's intended use. Our floating Mahjong table collection is a separate starting point for a poolside setup.
Where can I check delivery and returns?
Read the shipping policy and return policy, then review the delivery options shown at checkout.
